New passports are the document, issued by a national government, which certifies, for the purpose of international travel, the identity and nationality of its holder. The elements of identity are name, date of birth, sex, and place of birth. Mostly nationality & citizenship is similar. It gives a license to a person to travel abroad freely.

The idea of a passport came into existence as people began to travel from one country to another. In the United Kingdom, the origin of the identification is the 'Safe Conduct', which was, at first, little more than a note signed by the king or queen asking that the person who held it be allowed to travel freely. People of all countries could get Safe conducts. These were mentioned in an Act of Parliament in the reign of King Henry V in 1414. The 32-page blue British passport came into use after the First World War, - and with it came the modern British authorization service.

Most countries accept passport of other countries as valid for international travel and valid for entry. There are exceptions, such as when a country does not recognize the ID-issuing country as a sovereign state. Similarly, the passport-issuing nation may also stamp limitations on the authorization of its citizens to disallow to certain countries owing to poor or non-existent foreign relations, or security or health risks.

The new passports are issued by member states. The data page can be at the front or at the back of identification, and there are small design differences to indicate which member state is the issuer. The covers of ordinary new authorization are burgundy-red, with "European Union" written in the national language or languages. Below that are the names of the country, a national symbol, the word or words in the national language or languages for "passport", and, at the bottom, the symbol for a biometric permit.

New passports contain a message, usually near the front of a passport, requesting that the bearer of the ID be allowed to pass freely, and further requests that, in the event of need, the bearer be granted assistance. Occasionally the message is made in the name of the government or the head of state, notionally by the foreign minister or another representative of the government, often in support of the head of state.

All the citizens, including children, newborns and infants, must present a passport or other approved travel document for travel to outside country by air, land or sea. In the past, a drivers' license was capable enough to get you across a border, but not anymore. The Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 was passed in 2004. Along with it came the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative. The goal of that initiative is to facilitate entry for U.S. citizens and legitimate foreign visitors, while strengthening U.S. border security. To achieve the goal, the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative requires all travelers to have a passport or other accepted travel document to enter or depart the United States. Standard travel documents allow the Department of Homeland Security to quickly and reliably determine a traveler's identity and citizenship.
Required Documents
1. Proof of citizenship. This can be a previous passport or a certified (with a raised seal stamped into the paper) copy of your birth certificate.
2. Two identical two-inch square photos, color or black and white, with a white background, and a facial image size between one and one and 3/8 inches.
3. Proof of identification, with a photo and signature, such as a driver's license or student ID.
4. Fee of $60 for sixteen years old and over, $40 for fewer than sixteen.
5. A completed but unsigned form DSP-11. The appropriate authority must witness your signature when you present it. This form is available from post offices, or by calling Passport Services.
When Your Passport Expires
Be watchful of the expiration date of your passport. USA passports must be valid for at least six months after entry into a foreign country. While some countries are more relaxed about this regulation, all countries can and do implement the six month policy if the immigration official wants to. So if you are planning to travel, get your documents ready to go.
